Faces of Cannabis: Heather; Psoriasis, Anxiety and Marijuana

People often wonder what “types” of patients come in for cannabis (marijuana) recommendations. Today I was honored to be able to meet Heather. She is a 24 year old female who suffers from psoriases. Psoriasis is a skin disorder characterized by large scaly red rashes (plaques) that is a result of excess inflammation. It can affect every area of the body to include the scalp. Interestingly Heather does not medicate with cannabis to treat her psoriasis but to treat the anxiety that comes from having visible skin lesions.
It often amazes me how crude and abrasive people can be to one another. For Heather, her anxiety stems from people making comments to her in public about her skin lesions. She told me that often times people will say to her “you really should keep that covered” (refering to the lesions that affect her upper arms, elbows and forearms) as recently happened on line at the supermarket. She went to say that her old job made her cover her arms up at work and told her there was a company dress code. Many time she said people just stare at her as if “I am an alien”.
Heather had been self medicating with cannabis for the past 6 months. She stated that it allows her to go out in public without any anxiety about what people may say or think. Many times when people ask her what is wrong with her arms she will be calm enough to simply educate them about psoriasis and how debilitating it can be psychologically.
Cannabis has allowed her to work, socialize and function without anxiety. It has truly changed her life for the better. One of the great things about cannabis is that she can use it daily without fear of addiction or toxicity to her major organ systems. Because she vaporizes it she is not exposing herself to any smoke or carcinogens.

The difference amidst amateur consumption and medical employment of marijuana begs to be recognized. While I believe that a responsible adult ought to have the right to use marijuana recreationally, I do believe, without doubt, allowing an ill person use of a plant with a long history of medical value had better be accepted and legal. Marijuana has a enormous potential as a medication and more awareness and acceptance is called for. In Summary, legalize it!
this is just stupid. learn to deal with it! FFS!
Emil, why don’t you try and walk around looking like a leper for a week. See how quickly you change your mind about “dealing with it”. It’s not easy, it’s pretty painful at times, insanely annoying the rest of the time, and how ever tiny glance someone makes feels like someones just seen the first signs of the plague. Put simply living with psoriasis fucking sucks, as attested by me, my father, and everyone else that’s had to live with it. It never goes away, so I’m glad these people can find a way to deal with it. Me? I do the exact same as her, only I don’t have the luxury of going to a legal club, I’m forced to do it illegally. But I don’t care, I do anything to be rid of this curse; as would you if u only knew a tenth of the truth.
I feel for her. I have psoriasis all over my head and face. I have depression and anxiety over it. People look at me with disgust sometimes and it hurts because I am a really nice person and would never treat anyone like that. I smoke cannabis to ease the side effects of psoriasis. It doesn’t make things go away, it just helps me cope and makes itching and pain less aggressive. I feel horrible for anyone who has this illness. If anyone took away my harmless plant I would be forced to take depression, pain and anti inflammatory medication that was tearing up my stomach and causing problems with my organs. I refuse to be put on these medications because they harm me more than the psoriasis and arthritis is. Cannabis helps me more than just cope. It saved me from pain killer addiction.
