This blog is going to walk you through the steps of getting a medical marijuana card in Orange County, California.

Step 1: Determine if you have a qualifying diagnosis
Most patients think medical marijuana can only be recommended for dying patients or those with severe disabilities. In California, that is not the case. The most common reasons patients receive a medical marijuana card are:

a. Chronic Pain: any condition where chronic pain is a component can qualify. For example, back pain, joint pain, post-operative pain etc.

b. Muscle spasms: can be for many reasons but things like Multiple Sclerosis, Restless Legs Syndrome

c. Nausea and Poor Appetite

d. Insomnia and Anxiety

e. Mood disorders such as depression.

f. Inflammatory bowel disease including Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

***There are over 250 indications that we can recommend cannabis for. You can simply call our office and find out if your diagnosis will qualify. 877-721-0047

Step 2: Gather your medical documentation.
When you see a doctor for medical marijuana he will need to review your medical records and verify your diagnosis. You can simply contact your treating doctors office and ask that they release your medical records to you. They simply have you fill out a form.

Step 3: Locate a doctor that is specialized in recommending medical marijuana
Dr. Breen has extensive knowledge about the medicinal benefits of using marijuana and will be able to answer any questions you may have. Visit our website at www.MCSoCal.com and see our office locations in Irvine, CA and Long Beach, CA

Step 4: Simply bring in your documentation.
At your appointment Dr. Breen will review you medical records, go over all the benefits and risk of using medical marijuana, perform a physical exam and then determine if it is an appropriate treatment approach.

Step 5: Purchasing your Medicine at a Medical Marijuana Dispensary
Doctors are not allowed to provide you with the medical marijuana so you have to go to a local medical marijuana dispensary. You will need to bring your written recommendation signed by Dr. Breen They will make a copy of it and verify your eligibility by using our 24 hour online verification system. You can then purchase up to 8 ounces of medical marijuana.

The process is as simple as that. Dr. Breen and the staff of MCSoCal will make sure that all your questions are answered before your leave our office. We realize that for many patients this is a very new experience and can be nerve racking. We want to assure you that your doctors visit will be very professional and compassionate.

Thanks for visiting our site and reading our blog.

Today in Irvine I took care of 2 patients who were suffering from Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis that were using medical marijuana to help control their symptoms. Primarily they stated the cannabis reduces abdominal cramping, decreases diarrhea and decreased the amount of “flare ups” that they had in the past 12 months.

Many patients are unaware that cannabinoids (the medically active ingredients in the plant) have anti-inflammatory properties in addition to having analgesic properties. At it’s roots Inflammatory Bowel Disease is caused by inflammation in the walls of the large and small intestines. Essentially immune cells congregate and cause inflammation which leads to its symptoms of cramping, diarrhea, nausea, anorexia etc.

Typically patients are treated medically with drugs that block the inflammatory response. Mesalamine, corticosteroids and immune modulators all essentially do the same thing which is reduce inflammation. However many of these medications have unwanted side effects and patients need “something else” to help them.

IBD effects a very high percentage of the population. It can be extremely debilitating and often times leads to early death. Many patients have to have portions of their intestines removed because the inflammation is so severe.

I have found in my practice that patients who supplement with cannabis have better control of their symptoms. They require less corticosteroids (like prednisone), have less hospitalizations, trips to their doctor and have a healthier appetite. Once patients get used to vaporizing the cannabis they realize that they can incorporate it into their treatment regimen with ease.

If you or someone you know is suffering from IBD, Crohns or Ulcerative Colitis and would like more information to see if cannabis can improve the quality of your life feel free to give us a call at 877-721-0047 . You can also pre-qualify for free by visiting our website at www.mcsocal.com

Be blessed,

Today I evaluated a 26 year male who has suffered from intense abdominal cramping, constipation and intermittent diarrhea for the past 10 years. He has been tentatively diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS). He has a significant family history for Crohns disease but has been unable to schedule a colonoscopy due to no insurance. For the past 6 years he has been medicating with cannabis to control his symptoms.

Cannabis has a stabilizing affect on the digestive system. Because it binds to the nerves that control the digestive system it will reduce symptoms of IBS. Patients with diarrhea will start to have normal bowel movements. Abdominal cramping will be less frequent and intense. Patients appetites will improve.

The great thing about cannabis is that it has very few unwanted side effects. Patients can medicate without fear of hurting their liver or kidneys. This patient stated that since starting his cannabis regimen his frequency and severity of attacks has been reduced dramatically.

In most cases of patients with digestive complaints the preferred method of medicating is by inhaling using a digital vaporizer. There is immediate absorption without ANY SMOKE AT ALL!!! Also, the smell is significantly reduced so patients can medicate discreetly.

If you or someone you know would like more information about the postive benefits of using cannabis for digestive complaints feel free to schedule an appointment by calling 877-721-0047 or visit us online at www.mcsocal.com and pre-qualify for FREE.

As medical director for medical cannabis of southern california I often evaluate patients who take regular high doses of prednisone. Prednisone is the atomic bomb for inflammatory conditions such as crohns, ulcerative colitis, sever asthma and many other medical conditions. Unfortunately it’s effects do not come without significant side effects. Many patients can get relief of these side effects by using cannabis.

Typically patients who have to take prednisone experience sleeping irregularities, abdominal pain and bloating, appetite issues, nervousness and restlessness. Many times it can cause an acute and temporary psychosis. Prolonged use can cause weight gain, headaches, muscle pain and severe restlessness.

Unfortunately many patients who take prednisone have few other options.

ENTER CANNABIS.

Patients who use cannabis to combat some the more common side effects of prednisone typically respond and do much better. In addition, because cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory properties it can relieve the inflammation and decrease the amount of prednisone that patients have to use.

I recently followed up with a 42 women with severe colitis (inflammation of the digestive tract) who within 6 months was able to stop her use of prednisone completely! She is sleeping better, has an increased appetite (she was losing weight secondary to not eating…not good) and has less abdominal pain and indigestion.

This is common with many patients that I evaluate. If you or someone you know is taking prednisone regularly and would like an evaluation to see if cannabis can help please feel free to contact my office at 877-721-0047 and schedule an appointment.

Be blessed and have a great day!

As medical director for Medical Cannabis of Southern California I often evaluate patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Let me discuss a case that I had yesterday.

As medical director for Medical Cannabis of Southern California I often evaluate patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Let me discuss a case that I had yesterday.

A 34 y/o female presented with a diagnosis of Crohn’s disease c/o frequent abdominal cramping, loose stools and a lack of appetite. She was diagnosed in her late teens and has been suffering for many years. She came to me in desperation because none of the treatments her gastroenterologist has recommended have been effective. She was placed on prednisone for 10 years and “went insane”. In addition she experienced severe edema (water retention) which made “me puff up like a baloon”. She could not tolerate methotrexate (which is a immune modulator) during periods of remission. In addition she also has chronic intermittent knee and elbow pain which is common with patients with Crohn’s disease.

She said she made an appointment to come into my office because her father in law was a medical cannabis patient and had her try some of his medication during an episode with severe nausea and abdominal cramping. Her response was “amazing”. She stated it almost instantly alleviated her abdominal cramping and her nausea vanished. She was so encouraged by the results that she decided to give it a try a few more times with consistent results. The great thing about it sas that it also improved her appetite and helped her sleep.

Crohn’s disease is a disorder where the bodies immune system attacks the cells on the lining of the intestinal tract causing ulcers. It typically occurs in the teens and 20′s and then has a increase in recurrence in patients in their 50-70′s. It is characterized by severe nausea, abdominal cramping and loose stools (bloody or watery). Because it is an immune disorder it can also attack the joints causing joint pain, the skin causing various skin lesions and the eyes. There is no treatment that can cure crohn’s disease so doctors focus on treating the patients symptoms. Typically anti-inflammatory medications are given including corticosteroids. Immune modulators like methotrexate are often given during periods of remission. If serious complications occur (bowel narrowing, fistuals or full thickness ulceration) sometimes surgery is necessary.

Cannabis is a great alternative and complimentary treatment for patients with crohn’s disease. It has shown to eliminate nausea, reduce abdominal cramping and also increase patients appetites. It can also reduce the amount of loose stools patients suffer from during the day. The great thing is that it is very well tolerated and has minimal side effects. it is not toxic to any of the major organ systems and if vaporized (vs smoked) it does not affect a patients lungs. It is certainly worth trying for patients who suffer with this terribly debilitating disease.

For more information please visit our website at www.mcsocal.com and pre-qualify for free online from the comfort of your home. We have clinic locations in Long Beach, Irvine and Encinitas (San Diego)
